I'm not saying kill the leader because you want to be a leader, or rob your own friends because your in debt, it's all development.
A personality defines who you are as a person, and how you would react to certain situations and with the reaction a different outcome would partake. Goals are all part of a person's downfall and uprising, or whether they progress with anything in life. Some people describe a personality in a brief statement, but what I'm trying to say is take your character that extra step further. Character development takes a huge part in a person's personality. For instance, if someone's brother was killed, then they might have trust issues with everyone who they are around. If you search the definition of a personality, this would come up: "The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character." In a way, personality is character development, and in another way it isn't. If you create a character that only wants to become a gang member and shoot people, that isn't realistic at all. Think of it as someone would act in real life. Everybody has different personalities but majority of people have the same goals, and what they like/love. Also, people have to realize that people don't tend to settle for "just enough" unless your at the top or have dealt with specific situations that made your character look down and out. People may be scared of character killings when they act a certain way, but that ruins the whole point of role playing a character. People get killed everyday in real life, some people kill their own family, own friends and ect just to further themselves and reach where they want to be. If you want to role play correctly, don't be scared about your character being killed off just react how -you- developed your character's personality. There are basic personalities that the average person would make as their whole mindset.
Basic Personality types:
"Grimey at it's best."- This type of character would have had to been through so much in his life to turn this way, or just is unable to trust people. Basically what I mean by "Grimey" is a gritty person, not really having any affection towards others, basically using people to get to where he/she wants to be.
"Loverboy/girl"- This type of character would be the type that is just looking for affection, and yes, they do exist. Basically, this character would have had a rough situation with a male/female in his/her life would would make them seek out that affection else where.
"Where the loyalty at?"- This would be the most loyal of them all, say if somebody got picked on when they was little or was done dirty by someone that was close to them, they would yearn for that friendship or loyalty. If someone provided themselves as a loyal individual and protective of them, they would react the same way back.
"I want the top spot."- This would be the power hungry one, there is always someone that wants to become the next big guy and has the right skills and the brain to become it (majority don't.). This would also be part of a "grimey" personality depending on how you role played it.
"Paper chaser"- This would be the one that doesn't care about anything but the money, if they have 1000, they will want to have 2000. They will always want more, they strive on the thought of becoming rich. This is the type that tends to be the most successful. "The ones that chase green are the first to touch gold."
"Free soul"- This would be the type that had to deal with something in his/her life that would make them react in this way. They would most likely not care too much whether they live or die until they see themselves in that stretcher. Basically they think like a dog, not thinking about tomorrow or yesterday, just living for today.
With these in mind when developing a character, I promise you that you will have more fun when role playing your character. Like I said above, if you only want to join the gang, what's after that? Okay, your in it. Now you will start to get bored because you accomplished that goal and thats when the complaining starts. Your not forced to role play anything above, but you won't see yourself getting anywhere without a personality.
Beefs with friends, fellow gang members.
The point I want to bring up with this is that people once again aren't thinking much on their character, unless they have overall fear of a certain individual which would be a understanding. But what I've seen is people that role play not having much of a fear for anything, but they let the fear of a character kill OOC get in the way. Yes, you should fear for your life ICly, but anger tends to block certain things out. Friends turn enemies everyday over the smallest things and things add on to it everyday, and this also happens with gangs in reality. For example, EXAMPLE B might of messed with EXAMPLE A's girl, which would cause a confrontation, and that's maybe when another person might make them fight it out, but say if EXAMPLE A lost the fight, basically he lost his girl and got his ass beat infront of everyone. I don't know too many people that can walk away from something like that unless they had absolute fear of the gang and the reactions. But because of that situation, EXAMPLE A might plan either a robbery or something on EXAMPLE B, when he may think it's over. Suspense is realistic. Everything your character deals with, he/she should have multiple chances on different outcomes.
Always want more out of your character, no matter what it is.
