Seeing as the previous grammar thread is horribly incorrect, I thought everyone would benefit with an updated thread. I'm going to point out the most common mistakes that are made by members within the faction. Don't be that guy constantly making the same mistakes. I'm going to leave out the basic capitalization and punctuation grammar rules because everyone should be capable of doing those correctly.
First and foremost, "-.." is not, and never was, grammatically correct. I don't know how this came about but everybody and their mother in this faction uses this to show a stop after a sentence. It's wrong. There are only two correct ways to show stops after a sentence without using a period: "--" and "...", while a colon or semicolon may be used depending on the sentence.
Examples:
Wrong: Yo. I just got here-.. What's up?
Correct: Yo. I just got here... What's up?
Correct: Yo. I just got here-- What's up?
Correct: Yo. I just got here. What's up?
Another common mistake is the usage of apostrophes. You only need an apostrophe when you're omitting a letter from a word that isn't replaced by another letter. That means dis, dat, da, nigga, finna, gonna, neva, and other words of these such don't need an apostrophe. I see apostrophes used on the aforementioned words almost every day.
Examples:
Wrong: Let's go to the bar, nigga'.
Wrong: I just done 'dat.
Correct: You got ma whip!
Correct: My nigga finna get dis done.
Correct: I 'on't need yo' money.
Correct: I tol' you I'm from 'round here.
The above sentence is correct because you're omitting the last letter in the word "told", therefore you would use an apostrophe. The same with the word "around", except you're omitting the first letter. This goes for most slang words. If you have a new word instead of omitting a letter, you don't need an apostrophe. Dis, dat, ma, nigga, etc are all new words which don't omit letters without replacing them completely.
Another common mistake is the phonic use of periods within a sentence. Three periods should be used when using multiple periods in a sentence.
Examples:
Wrong: Yo.. What up?
Wrong: The Knicks won, man..
Correct: Yo... What up?
Correct: The Knicks won, man...
Punctuation should always go inside of quotation marks. The common mistake is leaving the period outside of the quotation marks.
Examples:
Wrong: "I seen him".
Wrong: "What time is it"?
Correct: "Here I am."
Correct: "Let's go!"
These are the most irritating grammar mistakes that I have seen throughout my time roleplaying here, but I'm going to keep updating this. You can ask any questions here.
